The Companies House search works by retrieving the section of the alphabetical names index that the search term appears in.
This means that if there is no 'exact' match, there will always be a 'nearest' match. The results usually return 100 names in strict alphabetical order, or how ever many are set within the application.
Companies House does not carry out wild card searching on the XML Gateway, but the 'Alpha Index' search is exactly the same on any of their online services.
